- Urgent update for macOS and iOS! Two actively exploited zero-days fixed

Apple has released security updates to fix a zero-day vulnerability exploited in the wild by attackers to hack into iPhones and Macs running older iOS and macOS versions. Successful exploitation of this bug leads to arbitrary code execution with kernel privileges on compromised devices. Apple also backported security updates for two previously patched zero-days, one of them reported by The Citizen Lab and used to deploy NSO Pegasus spyware on hacked devices.

Thanks to Apple for getting patch out so quickly. Besides today's zero-day, Apple had to deal with what looks like an unending stream of zero-day bugs used in attacks targeting iOS and macOS devices:. Update: A previous version of the story said Apple fixed three zero-days, one of them used to deploy spyware. We have updated the story to correctly say the company patched a single zero-day exploited in the wild.

The latest release pushes out fixes for a pair of zero-day vulnerabilities that researchers have seen actively exploited in the wild. The former is an out-of-bounds write issue in an Intel Graphics driver and the latter is an out-of-bounds-read issue in the AppleAVD media decoder that would allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code with kernel privileges. Impacted devices include the iPhone 6S and newer, the iPad Pro all models , the iPad Air 2 and later, iPad 5 th generation and later, iPad mini 4 and later, and the iPod Touch 7 th generation.

Also note that users with Macs running macOS Monterey are at risk. Those allowed attackers to execute arbitrary code with kernel privileges and track web browsing activity in real time.

Then in February, Apple released another patch to address a new zero-day exploit that allowed attackers to hack iPhones, iPads, and Macs, leading to OS crashes and arbitrary code execution. It appears is shaping up a lot like Last year, Apple faced a seemingly endless stream of zero-day exploits and spent much of the year busily pushing fixes out the door.
